Born 1978, London, UK.
Karen Tang exhibits internationally in galleries and the public realm. Tang completed her BA at Chelsea College of Arts and went on to the Slade School of Fine Art, leaving in 2004 with an MFA (Distinction) in Sculpture where she was awarded the Duveen Travel Scholarship for research in Italy and Mexico. Tang’s sculptures have been commissioned by The Economist with The Contemporary Art Society, The National Trust, VITRINE, South London Gallery, Ealing Council, and private collections, and been presented at venues including: l’étrangère, Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium Norway, Bloomberg Space, Jerwood Space, Ambika P3, MAMA Rotterdam, Dalston Superstore, Guest Projects, CFCCA Manchester, Agency Gallery, Pumphouse Gallery, Sainsburys Centre for Visual Arts and The Collection, Lincoln. Karen Tang is also an Associate Lecturer in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
Tang makes sculptures and installations that explore themes from science, sci-fi, architecture and city life. Her works present surprising structural and material combinations; industrial steel and fibreglass with fluid, painterly surfaces. Colour is intrinsic to the works’ physical presence and the perception of their sculptural forms in space. A variety of making processes are central in Tang’s practice, including epoxy ‘glassing’, carving, modelling, painted or powder-coated metal.
