Małgorzata Markiewicz / Alternativa 2015 & The London Summer Intensive

l’étrangère is delighted to be working with Małgorzata Markiewicz. As an artist, Markiewicz employs various media with a focus on fabric. Her materials include objects, re-worked ready-mades, photographs, video works, and actions based on everyday activities associated with women and the domestic.

The work pictured above entitled The Other Is Included Within the Boundary of Selfhood (Luce Irigaray), 2015 features in this year’s edition of Alternativa in Gdansk, Poland: a festival of exhibitions and events, which seeks new tracks for visual art and its social role. The work comprises several coloured tablecloths which Markiewicz bought in a shop run by immigrants in Skarholmen, Sweden. These fabrics had an aesthetics that was completely contrasting to the modest and subtlety of Swedish design. Placed on the floor these mosaics of glistening gold and pink are a negation of this refined and contrived design aesthetic. More information about the work and Alternativa can be found here.

We are also happy to announce that Markiewicz has been selected as a participant in this year’s London Summer Intensive, an artists’ residency programme led by Camden Arts Centre & the Slade School of Fine Art. The residency focuses on independent studio practice supported by an artist facilitator and an exciting series of visiting artists. More information can be found here.

Markiewicz is also participating in a major group exhibition:
Gender in Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow, 15 May – 27 September 201
