Elemente des realen Lebens (Elements of real life)
Touring group exhibition curated by Nina Schedlmayer

“Collage is traditionally the link through which elements of real life – a piece of wallpaper, a stuffed goat – entered the language of contemporary art.” This is what the curator Laura Hoptman writes in a catalog essay. The early collages and photomontages created by avant-garde artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Höch and Raoul Hausmann in the 1910s and ’20s were a major innovation for art. They also took account of the fact that life was increasingly perceived as an accumulation of fragments – technologization accelerated everyday life, the working world changed.
One hundred years later we live in a world in which we are constantly bombarded by digital news stories and images, as well as advertising messages and posts on social networks: from these fragments, we assemble our life collage ourselves. Between the individual elements, in how we connect them together, meaning is created – as the avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp already recognised.
Collage in the historical sense has long since evolved into the sculptural and types of installation. Nevertheless, it is striking that many contemporary artists are revisiting them and inserting different content.
The exhibition approaches this artistic method by means of recent examples from Austrian art – among others, by Sophie Dvořák, Karin Fisslthaler, Bernhard Hosa, Ursula Hübner, Claudia Larcher and Anita Witek
